South Africans in the Middle East: What Your Options Look Like Right Now

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been following the news coming out of the Middle East with a heavy heart.

Like many South Africans, I know people working in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Professionals who left for opportunity, growth, adventure and now they’re watching headlines about escalating conflict, airspace disruptions, evacuations, and uncertainty about what comes next.

There are already reports of South Africans caught in the region, struggling to get clarity or assistance. That’s not easy for them, and it’s not easy for the families waiting back home.

In times like this, your perspective shifts.

For years, many left South Africa looking for stability. Ironically, for the first time in a long while, South Africa is starting to feel like the steadier option. Economically, we’ve seen encouraging signs, such as eased load shedding, improved governance confidence, and a better Budget Speech. There’s momentum again.

When we compare what’s different NOW compared to ten years ago:
Coming home no longer has to mean resigning and remote work changed the equation.

Employer of Record models changed the compliance barrier. Today, a South African working for a global company in the Middle East can relocate back home and continue in the same role… for the same company + same career trajectory. They are employed legally through South African payroll and protected under local labour law.

I’ve already had conversations with a few people exploring exactly that.

Now, it is not about panic but merely about options.
If you are a South African currently in the Middle East and feeling uncertain, know that there are options to return without derailing your career.

And, if you are an employer with South African talent in the region, this is a moment to lean in, and not let good people go because of geography.

More than anything, my thoughts are with those who are navigating flights, borders, and uncertainty right now. Safety first, then career conversation can follow.

Home is still here.
